Migration to Europe
The time has come this week. As an innovator for the Dutch (digital) government, I’ve of course been aware of cloud computing, hyperscalers, and Big Tech for quite some time. But now enough is enough! It was time for me to take action. I’m migrating my personal IT to Europe (or at least making an attempt to do so).
A major source of inspiration and information is Bert Hubert. And coincidentally, I listened to an episode of BNR Digitaal last week (yesterday). It featured a conversation with Bert Hubert, former supervisor of intelligence services and initiator of ‘Cloud Kootwijk’, and Kay Eeftink, CEO of The Good Cloud.
OK. But what am I going to do then?
- What are alternatives to GMail?
- What are alternatives to Dropbox?
- What are alternatives to web hosting? Well, here you have to search a bit for Dutch providers
Let’s go! 😃
UPDATE 21 March 2026
Wow, it turns out this is genuinely hard to follow through on. Reality has a way of pushing back:
- Storage — over a year ago I found a Nextcloud instance at TheGood.Cloud. Dropbox is history.
- Email — set up my own domain. Tried Proton, but the integration with my phone and contacts didn’t work out. Now happy with Tuta.
- Tip — came across Cirrux last week. Worth keeping an eye on.
